Events

June on the Sunrise Coast is an exciting, fun filled month with plenty of events and activities to keep the whole family entertained, and forms the start of the summer events calendar.

During the month of June, the Circus comes to town! This classic form of family orientated entertainment is hosted by Circus Ferrel, an all-human touring circus with a stunning big top. The show has all the favourites of a traditional family friendly circus, such as Marty the Clown and Grandma the Ringmaster, and gives it a modern theatrical twist. Circus Ferrel will be hosting two dates in Lowestoft - St Mary’s Primary School from the 11th to the 14th June and Whitton Green Primary School from the 18th to the 21st June.

Halesworth is the place to be for a fun family day out, as they host their traditional town carnival and fete on Sunday 14th June. The Carnival procession makes its way through the town centre, leading to the town park, where you will find fun for the whole family including a fun pet show, fancy dress competition and Razz the Clown, with entertainment provided by the Southwold & Reydon Band and the Suffolk Samba Band. If that wasn’t enough, there will also be various trade stalls in the park, a BBQ, a refreshment and food tent and a public bar.

A day out in the Sunrise Coast is a great way to enjoy Father’s Day on Sunday 21st June. You can chose from meandering among the various arts and crafts stalls in the beautiful Nicholas Everitt Park courtesy of Artist Boulevard, to spending the day amidst the history and heritage of Somerleyton Hall where accompanied Dads go free, to experiencing the nostalgic atmosphere of a Superswing band, military vehicles and the Second Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles re-enactors at the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum. Whatever your tastes, there is something for every family to enjoy.

There is also a treat for local theatre goes, in the form of Sweeny Todd– a devilishly dark, musical delight filled with heart-stopping drama, razor sharp humour and blood by the bucketful! Thanks to local theatre group Spotlight, Beccles Public Hall will come alive from the 23rd to 27th June with the story of the cut-throat demon barber of Victorian legend. Spotlight have assembled a superb cast for this notoriously demanding musical with ex-professional performer Stephen Picton taking on the role of Sweeny with Spotlight stalwart Debra Lambert playing Mrs Lovett.

June also sees the start of the traditional Sunday Band Concerts in Nicholas Everitt Park with Wrentham band playing the first date of the season on Sunday 28th June. With the weather hopefully playing fair, this would be a perfect way to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon, passing the time in the beautiful Nicholas Everitt Park, gateway to the Southern Broads.

Whilst June provides us with a number exciting and different days out, the season’s truly spectacular events are yet to take place. Latitude, the award-winning three-day performing arts festival is only a few weeks away, from the 16th to 19th July, and promises to be bigger and better than ever, with headlining acts the Pet Shop Boys and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival takes place in 2009 over the 23rd and 24th July, and the Red Arrows have already confirmed their attendance, and are set to wow the crowds of Lowestoft seafront once more with their amazing aerobatics.

These are just a couple of events to look forward to over the 2009 season, not to mention Gig in the Park from 7th to 9th August, Lowestoft Carnival on Sunday 9th August, Beccles Carnival Procession and Family Fun Weekend on 29th and 30th August, the Grand Henham Steam Rally on the 19th and 20th September, and Ways With Words Literature Festival from the 12th to the 16th November – to name but a few more!
