Welcome to September on the Sunrise Coast – a month of great events which really make the most of the late summer weather.

Heritage Open Days: The Secrets Behind The Sunrise Coast
Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. From 9th to 12th September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, ranging from castles to smokehouses, town halls to torpedo boats. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures in the local area and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture. Download a PDF copy of the programme here or alternatively view the programme on line in date order.

Continuing with the heritage theme, the East Anglian Transport Museum hold the last of their special event weekends of the season on the 11th & 12th September. The Trolleybus Weekend 2010 sees a collection of visiting classic and vintage vehicles, plus all available trolleybuses and trams will be giving rides. The Museum will even stay open until 9pm on the Saturday evening to allow rides after dark!

Sunday 5th September sees the Waveney Greenpeace Celebration Gig, held at Hulver Farm near Bungay. The fair aims to promote green issues and raise money for Greenpeace whilst also providing great entertainment such as stalls, workshops, acoustic and electric music – not to mention real food and real ale stalls.

Beccles Duck Race 2010 takes place on 5th September, held at Beccles Quay, it’s a great day out for all the family. Alongside the race itself there will be an arena with family events taking place during the day, plus stalls, a tombola, and BBQ.

For those looking for a more active day out, Sunday 12th September sees both WaterWalk 2010 and the 15th annual Scores Race. WaterWalk 2010 raises funds for Cancer Research UK and is a sponsored walk or run along Lowestoft’s beautiful seafront to the picturesque cliffs of Pakefield and back again. It’s a great day out on Lowestoft’s award-winning beaches and seafront, and you can cheer on all of those taking part. The Scores Race is an annual favourite and real test of endurance as competitors race up and down the steep scores of north Lowestoft.

Beccles Music Festival takes place from the 17th to the 26th September 2010 and is held in the magnificent medieval parish church of St Michael the Archangel, a wonderful venue that can seat up to 600. The festival brings together high quality professional Classical and Jazz musicians along with talented local artists and is a real treat for music lovers and enthusiasts.

The ever-popular Henham Steam Rally is held on 18th & 19th September, in the grounds of the Henham estate. Now in its 36th year, it’s a great day out for all the family, with over 18,000 people attending over the two days. The main theme of the Rally is mechanical heritage with the emphasis on steam, but there will be engines in all shapes and sizes as well as working demonstrations of threshing, stone cutting and sawing. Homage is also paid to other forms of vintage power such as stationary engines, tractors, cars, commercial and military vehicles. There will also be a vintage fairground, live music and arts and craft displays.

What a great way to enjoy the last of the warm summer weather that September has to offer, with plenty more to enjoy as we fall into autumn. October arts festivals, November brings literary festivals and performances from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, whilst December brings a whole host of festive fun!
