Local produce
The Sunrise Coast has a wide range of local produce available for visitors to enjoy and sample the distinct tastes the area has to offer.
The coastline has a deep-rooted heritage with the fishing industry. Whilst the number of trawlers going out of the harbours has declined, fresh fish from Lowestoft and Southwold is widely available from harbour stalls and local fish merchants. Local catches include Cod, Place, Herring and Dover Sole; you may also be lucky to pick up local Whiting and Sea Bass. The smoke houses in Lowestoft provide an insight into smoking traditions as well as providing that unique smoky flavour to your fish.
Suffolk produces around 20% of the nations pork and there are some well-known producers within the Sunrise Coast including the popular Blythburgh Free Range Pork. Local butchers will be able to advise you on breed, sourcing and traceability of the meat they supply. There is also a wide range of seasonal Game available throughout the area and for those visiting around Christmas picking up a famous Norfolk Black Turkey from Rumburgh Farm Turkeys near Halesworth will be an extra special treat to the Christmas dinner table.
One of the most popular local products available on The Sunrise Coast is Adnams famous Suffolk Ale. Produced in Southwold, Adnams is available throughout the Sunrise Coast. Brewery tours are available around the factory and a visit to the Adnams shop “The Cellar and Kitchen Store” is a must. As well as Adnams there is also a range of smaller breweries throughout the district including St Peter’s Brewery.
The Sunrise Coast is also home to the award winning Wissett Wines near Halesworth. Visitors will be able to explore the Vineyards and take part in some local wine tasting.
For the cooks amongst you, you may wish to try your hand at a few local recipes such as Lowestoft Minted Herrings or Lowestoft Buttons. Others may wish to sample Southwold Butter Buns available at the town butcher on Thursdays.
